The trap

FamilyTreeNow is free and completely ungated, which is what makes a stale record here worse than it looks. Most people-search sites tease a name and put the address history and relatives behind a paywall. FamilyTreeNow shows the address history, the birth year, and the mapped list of relatives to anyone, with no account and no payment. The second trap is that opting yourself out does not touch your relatives' records, and those records still name you as a relative.

The method

01 Start at the opt-out page, not your listing

Go to familytreenow.com/optout. Unlike most people-search sites, FamilyTreeNow does not want a listing URL. It asks for an email address and a CAPTCHA first, then hands you its own internal search. Use an email you can actually open, because the whole request hinges on a link sent to it.
02 Click Begin Opt Out Procedure

Enter the email, complete the CAPTCHA, and click Begin Opt Out Procedure. This drops you onto a search form that only exists inside the opt-out flow. Nothing has been submitted yet at this point.
03 Find the record that is genuinely you

Enter your first name, last name, city, state, and birth year. Add a middle name only if your listing shows one, because an extra field can hide the record you are looking for. FamilyTreeNow commonly holds several records for one person, split across a maiden name, a middle initial, or an address you left years ago.
04 Open View Details, then Opt Out This Record

Click View Details on the matching result to open the full profile. The red Opt Out This Record button sits above your name, birth date, and age. Click it. Check the profile really is yours first: birth year and address history are the reliable tells, since names repeat.
05 Click the verification link, then repeat

FamilyTreeNow emails a verification link and the removal does not process until you click it. Check spam if it has not arrived within a few minutes. Then go back and repeat the search for every other record that is you. Give it a week, search yourself again, and re-file anything still standing.

Is the FamilyTreeNow opt out a hoax?

No. The opt-out at familytreenow.com/optout is genuine, free, and it works. The reason people ask is that the process went viral in 2017 with garbled instructions attached, and because the removal is silent: there is no confirmation screen after you click the verification link, so it feels like nothing happened. Search your name again in a few days rather than judging it on the spot.

How long does FamilyTreeNow take to remove your information?

Most records drop within a couple of days of the verification link being clicked, and FamilyTreeNow does not publish a firm deadline. Give it a full week before deciding the request failed. If a record is still live after that, the usual cause is an unclicked verification email rather than a rejected request.

Why does FamilyTreeNow show my relatives?

Because relatives are the product. FamilyTreeNow is built as a genealogy tool, so it deliberately links records into family groups using shared surnames and address histories, then publishes the map for free.
