All five features Bitdefender publishes for it are monitoring or advice: Data Breach Detection, Digital Footprint Visualization, Real Time Breach Notification, an Identity Protection Score and security advice. None of them submits an opt-out request to a data broker. Bitdefender confirms this in its official product FAQ, which says the source of each piece of information is listed "so you can tell where it came from and also act to remove it if you are interested". It is good value for breach and dark web monitoring, and poor value if your goal is getting your name and address off people-search sites, because Optery charges $39.00 for the same first year and actually files removals across 405 or more sites. Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection has a name that sounds like a data removal service, sits in the same aisle as the removal services, and is bought by a lot of people who want their details taken off people-search sites. It does not do that. It is a monitoring product, and Bitdefender is reasonably clear about this once you read past the plan card, but almost nobody does.
We read Bitdefender's own Digital Identity Protection page and its official product FAQ on 9 September 2026. Every price, feature description and quote below came off those two pages, not from a review site's summary of them.
What Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection costs
Three Bitdefender plans include Digital Identity Protection. The first figure is what a new customer pays for the first year, the second is the list price Bitdefender shows next to it, which is what the subscription renews at.

The standalone plan works out at $3.33 a month billed yearly, and Bitdefender attaches a 30-day money-back guarantee to all three. The renewal step is the part to diary. Paying $39.99 and renewing at $79.99 is a 100% increase in year two, and it happens automatically unless you turn off the auto-renewal in your Bitdefender Central account. If you are the kind of person who finds out about a price rise when the card statement lands, it is worth having something that watches what those recurring charges are doing to your credit file as well, because a forgotten renewal and a missed payment are the same problem wearing different clothes.
The thing to understand before you buy: it monitors, it does not remove

The right-hand column is the review. Not one of the five features files a removal request with a data broker. Bitdefender confirms it in the official product FAQ, in the answer to the question about where the information in your public profile came from: "The source is listed next to every piece of information so you can tell where it came from and also act to remove it if you're interested." You act. The only removal Bitdefender performs on your behalf is deleting your data from Bitdefender's own system, which is what its other two removal-related FAQ answers are about.
This is not a scandal and it is not hidden. It is a category confusion that costs people money, because "Digital Identity Protection" reads like a takedown service and the marketing line is "Take full control of your digital footprint." Control here means visibility. You get a map. You still do the walking.
What it is genuinely good at
Two things, and they are worth saying plainly because the removal services are mostly bad at both. First, breach monitoring: Bitdefender scans public sites, dark web sources and underground forums for your exposed credentials, and the alerting is fast and specific about which organization leaked what. A dedicated removal service will not tell you that your password from a 2019 breach is circulating.
Second, the footprint visualization is a genuinely useful first look at accounts you had forgotten you opened. If your actual worry is "what have I signed up for over fifteen years and what did those companies do with it", that is the question this product answers, and $39.99 for the first year is a fair price for the answer.
What it will not do is get your name, address, age and relatives off Whitepages, Spokeo, Radaris and the two hundred other people-search sites that publish them. Breach monitoring and broker removal are different jobs. Buying one when you needed the other is the mistake this article exists to prevent.
How it compares to services that actually file removals

The line that should decide this for most people is the third row. Optery Core is $39.00 for the first year, effectively the same money as Bitdefender's $39.99, and it files removals across 405 or more sites and shows you screenshot evidence of the listings before you pay anything. If your goal is removal rather than monitoring, paying Bitdefender the same amount to be told where your data is makes very little sense. How does Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection work?
You give it your name, email addresses and phone numbers, and it scans public records, breach databases, dark web marketplaces and underground forums for matches. It then builds a visual map of your digital footprint, scores your exposure, names the organizations that leaked your data, and alerts you in real time when something new appears. Acting on any of it is your job.

It is worth it if you want breach and dark web monitoring, and it is poor value if you want your listings taken down. At $39.99 for the first year it is fairly priced for what it is, but it renews at $79.99 and it never files an opt-out. Optery charges $39.00 for the same first year and actually submits removals across 405 or more sites.

Does Bitdefender Total Security include Digital Identity Protection?
No. Bitdefender lists three plans as including Digital Identity Protection on the product page we read on 9 September 2026, and Total Security is not one of them. The cheapest bundle that includes it is Ultimate Security at $89.99 for the first year. Buying Total Security and expecting identity monitoring to be part of it is a common and expensive misreading.
Do I need Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection?
You need it if your concern is credential exposure: reused passwords, old accounts, breach fallout and account takeover. You do not need it if your concern is that strangers can look up your home address, age and family members on people-search sites, because it will show you those listings and leave you to remove them one at a time.
Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection vs Incogni
They solve different problems, so the comparison usually resolves on what you came for. Incogni is $95.88 a year and files removal requests across 420 or more brokers, including the advertising and data enrichment layer that people-search-only services miss. Bitdefender is $39.99 and files nothing. Pick Incogni to be removed, Bitdefender to be informed.
How to cancel Bitdefender Digital Identity Protection
Turn off the auto-renewal in your Bitdefender Central account, which Bitdefender says you can opt out of at any time. If you are inside the 30-day money-back window, request the refund rather than just disabling renewal. Bitdefender keeps the data behind your profile for six months after a subscription lapses, and you can email support to have it erased sooner.
The bundled-suite pattern, now four vendors deep
Bitdefender is the fourth security suite we have checked, and the pattern is consistent enough to be useful. Every major antivirus brand now sells something privacy-shaped as an add-on, and the thing being sold varies far more than the marketing suggests. Norton's product page claims "over 2,000" data broker sites while its own feature page claims "over 200" for the same service, and the only roster Norton actually publishes comes to 368 entries. McAfee's own plan table marks Personal Data Cleanup as "Scans only" on the tier it recommends most. Malwarebytes does file removals, but across a 100+ roster it does not itemize, and it excludes the product from its own 60-day guarantee by name. Bitdefender does not remove anything at all.
The question to ask any of them is not how many sites they claim. It is which plan you are on, whether that plan submits requests or hands you links, and what happens at renewal.
