The short answer

IDShield sells four monthly plans: $14.95 or $19.95 for one adult and $29.95 or $34.95 for a family, depending on whether it monitors one credit bureau or three. Every plan gets the same features, including a licensed private investigator for restoration and up to $3 million in coverage. Its Privacy Check covers "several top data broker sites", runs through a partner, and has no published count.

Prices and features are from IDShield's own plan pages, FAQ and blog. We sell a competing removal service, which is why every IDShield figure here is IDShield's, not ours.

IDShield cost

How much does IDShield cost per month?

IDShield keeps its pricing simple. There are two plan sizes, individual and family, and one choice inside each: Experian credit monitoring only, or all three bureaus. Every other feature is identical across the four plans. What it does not do is print a yearly price, so the annual figures below are twelve monthly payments, which is what most members end up paying.

IDShield plan prices per month and per year, who each plan covers, and which credit bureaus it monitors
Plan Covers Monthly Yearly Credit
IDShield Individual, 1 bureau 1 adult $14.95 $179.40 Experian
IDShield Individual, 3 bureaus 1 adult $19.95 $239.40 All 3
IDShield Family, 1 bureau 2 adults + kids $29.95 $359.40 Experian
IDShield Family, 3 bureaus 2 adults + kids $34.95 $419.40 All 3

The FAQ does list annual bank draft and annual credit card as payment options, and it adds a line worth reading before you choose one: annual members may cancel any time after their first 12 months. Monthly members can cancel whenever they like, but only in writing, by email to member services with your membership number.

What every IDShield plan includes

Because all four plans share one feature list, the review of IDShield is the same whichever you pick. The strongest part is what happens after something goes wrong. The weakest is the part that is supposed to stop your details from being so easy to find in the first place.

Identity monitoring

SSN, dark web, social media, public records, court records, address change, minor child, sex offender search, medical data reports.

Credit monitoring

One bureau (Experian) or three, monthly score tracker, hard inquiry, payday loan, sub-prime and high-risk application alerts.

Restoration

A dedicated licensed private investigator if your identity is stolen, 24/7 emergency help, lost wallet assistance.

Insurance

Up to $3 million for covered identity fraud expenses, underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company.

Device security

VPN, password manager, malware and ransomware protection on up to 3 devices.

Privacy Check

A scan of "several top data broker sites" with help removing what it finds. No site count is published.

Restoration is where IDShield earns its price. If your identity is stolen, you get a dedicated licensed private investigator rather than a call center queue, and IDShield describes the service as guaranteed restoration to your pre-theft status. Most suites offer "restoration specialists". A licensed investigator who owns your case is a real difference if you ever need it, and it is the reason IDShield keeps strong reviews from members who have been through a theft.

IDShield review

Does IDShield remove personal information from data brokers?

Partly, and less visibly than the other suites. IDShield added Privacy Check in 2024. Its homepage says the feature can "locate your sensitive, personal info on top data broker sites" and that "you can decide if you want to remove it". Three details sit underneath that.

Who does the removing

A partner, Hello Privacy

IDShield's own blog post introducing the feature says "All you need is Hello Privacy to perform these tasks on your behalf", then lists scan, remove and monitor. The removal engine is a third party's, the same arrangement we found behind Coveron, which resells Incogni.

How many brokers

"Several top data broker sites"

That is the only number IDShield gives. There is no list and no count. Aura publishes 425+, IDX over 100, Incogni 420+ and EasyOptOuts an itemized 216. A buyer comparing suites cannot tell how IDShield stacks up, which on its own is useful information.

Who has to act

You choose, then they request

The scan shows what it found and you decide what to remove. IDShield's privacy page adds that its consultation specialists "can make requests on your behalf to keep your information off data broker websites". Nothing on its pages says how often the scan repeats.

None of this makes Privacy Check useless. It is included at no extra cost and it will clear some of the largest people-search listings. But brokers relist you from fresh public records every few months, and a removal feature you cannot size is hard to rely on. The scan at the top of this page shows which sites publish you right now, so you can check whether IDShield's handful covers them.

What a year of IDShield costs against the alternatives

For one adult, IDShield is one of the more expensive suites once you add up twelve months, and the only one in this table whose broker coverage cannot be compared at all. LifeLock Core and Aura both cost less over a year and both monitor more bureaus than the $14.95 plan.

Swipe the table sideways to see every column.

IDShield compared with LifeLock, Aura, IDX, Identity Guard and a removal service on yearly price, broker removal, credit monitoring and billing
Service A year Broker removal Credit Billing
IDShield, 1 bureau $179.40 Privacy Check, count not published 1 bureau Monthly price only
IDShield, 3 bureaus $239.40 Privacy Check, count not published 3 bureaus Monthly price only
LifeLock Core $124.99 Smaller unpublished set, every 90 days 2 bureaus Same price at renewal
Aura Individual $144 425+ sites 3 bureaus 14-day trial
IDX Privacy $139.92 Over 100 brokers, monthly rescan None Annual or monthly
Identity Guard Value $90 then $107.88 None None Renews higher
IDShield 1 bureau + EasyOptOuts $199.39 216 itemized broker domains 1 bureau Two bills

LifeLock, Aura, IDX and Identity Guard figures are their own published annual rates for one adult. EasyOptOuts ($19.99 a year) removed 65 percent of listings in the 2024 Consumer Reports test of seven removal services, on the only plan it sells. The head-to-head with LifeLock, including family pricing, is in IDShield vs LifeLock pricing.

Families are where IDShield closes the gap. The family plan covers two adults and every dependent child under 18 for $359.40 a year with one bureau. LifeLock's equivalent, two adults and up to ten children on Core, costs $344.99. Aura Family covers five adults for $384, and IDX Privacy's family plan (two adults, five minors) costs $280.32 with over 100 brokers.

How to get the most out of IDShield if you already pay for it

Step 1

Run Privacy Check

It is included. Let it find what it can on its partner list and approve every removal it offers.

Step 2

Compare against a full scan

Run the scan at the top of this page and see which people-search sites still publish your address and phone.

Step 3

Cover the gap

File the rest yourself or add a removal service with a published list. Brokers relist, so pick one that rescans.

Step 4

Ask for the annual price

If you plan to stay, ask member services for the annual rate, and remember annual members cannot cancel in year one.

If you want to file opt-outs yourself, our data broker opt-out list has the forms for the large sites. Most people stop after about ten, because every broker has its own verification step and many relist you within months. That repeat work is what a removal service is for.

Is IDShield worth it? It depends what you are buying it for

You want a real person if the worst happens

IDShield, $14.95 a month

A dedicated licensed private investigator on your case is the best restoration setup among the consumer suites.

You already have LegalShield

IDShield added to it

Bundling with the legal plan through the same associate is the most common way people buy it, and the features are the same.

You are covering a family with young kids

IDShield Family, $29.95 a month

Every dependent under 18 living with you is covered, with minor child monitoring included.

You want removal you can measure

A removal service with a list

IDShield does not say how many brokers it covers. EasyOptOuts itemizes 216 domains for $19.99, Incogni covers 420+ for $95.88.

You want one bill for alerts and removal

Aura Individual, $144 a year

Three-bureau credit monitoring and removal from 425+ sites, for less than a year of IDShield.

You want a person on the stubborn brokers

DataRemoval, from $9 a month billed yearly

Our own plan: a human works the brokers that reject automated requests, we rescan monthly, and you get a dated log of every request. It sits next to IDShield without overlap.

Our view, as a company that sells the removal half: IDShield is a legitimate, long-running service with the best restoration model in the category and a price that only looks low because it is quoted by the month. It is weakest at the job we do. If you are choosing a removal service to sit next to it, our ranking of the best data removal services prices the field, and the LifeLock data broker removal breakdown shows how the closest rival handles the same problem.

Reviews of IDShield, common questions

How much does IDShield cost per month?

IDShield costs $14.95 a month for one adult with Experian credit monitoring, or $19.95 a month with all three bureaus. The family plan costs $29.95 a month with one bureau or $34.95 with three. A full year of the individual plans comes to $179.40 or $239.40, since IDShield publishes monthly prices only.

Is IDShield legit?

Yes. IDShield is the identity theft product of Pre-Paid Legal Services, the company behind LegalShield, which has sold legal plans since 1972. Its up to $3 million identity fraud plan is underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company, and restoration is handled by licensed private investigators.

Does IDShield remove personal information from data brokers?

Partly. IDShield Privacy Check scans "several top data broker sites" and helps remove what it finds, and IDShield says its specialists can file requests for you. Its own blog says the removals are performed by Hello Privacy. IDShield does not publish how many brokers are covered or how often it rescans.

Is IDShield worth it?

IDShield is worth it if you want restoration handled by a licensed private investigator and are happy paying monthly. For removal it is weaker value: a year of the individual plan costs $179.40 to $239.40, while Aura charges $144 for three-bureau credit monitoring plus removal from 425+ sites.

Is IDShield the same as LegalShield?

IDShield and LegalShield are sister products from the same company, Pre-Paid Legal Services. LegalShield is a legal services plan and IDShield is identity theft protection. They are sold separately or together, often by independent LegalShield associates, which is why many IDShield sign-up links carry an associate name.

Does IDShield have a family plan?

Yes. The IDShield family plan covers you, your spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children under 18 living with you. It costs $29.95 a month with Experian credit monitoring or $34.95 with three bureaus, which is $359.40 or $419.40 over a year. Every family plan includes the same features as the individual plans.

Does IDShield have an annual plan?

IDShield prints only monthly prices on its plan pages, but its FAQ lists annual bank draft and annual credit card as payment options. The same FAQ says annual members may cancel any time after their first 12 months, so an annual membership is a one-year commitment. Ask for the annual price before you pay.

How do I cancel IDShield?

IDShield requires cancellation in writing. Its FAQ says the easiest way is to email member services with your name, membership number, phone number and a request to cancel. Monthly members can cancel any time. Annual members can cancel after their first 12 months. If your employer provides IDShield, tell HR as well.

Which is better, IDShield or LifeLock?

LifeLock is cheaper and IDShield is stronger on restoration. LifeLock Core costs $124.99 a year with two-bureau credit monitoring and removal every 90 days. IDShield costs $179.40 a year with one bureau and assigns a licensed private investigator if your identity is stolen. Neither publishes how many brokers it removes you from.
