Verizon Call Filter is free on any standard monthly or prepaid plan with a compatible device, and Call Filter Plus costs $3.99 a month, or $10.99 a month across three or more lines. The free tier detects spam, filters it to voicemail and keeps a blocked call log. Paying adds Caller ID, spam lookup, a personal block list, a spam risk meter and blocking by category. Neither tier reduces how many spam calls are placed to you, because Call Filter never touches the sites and lists that publish your phone number.

Worth knowing before you subscribe
Call Filter is being folded into Verizon Protect
Verizon has posted a notice on its own Call Filter support page saying that Call Filter is moving to Verizon Protect, and that all Call Filter services will be moving into Verizon Protect soon. Verizon has not published a date or a replacement price alongside that notice, so the honest position is that the $3.99 tier is what is on sale today and the terms may change when the migration lands. If you are weighing up a year of Call Filter Plus against a one-off piece of cleanup work, that uncertainty belongs in the calculation.
Verizon Call Filter free vs Plus, feature by feature
The upgrade is narrower than the marketing suggests. Detection, filtering and the blocked call log are all in the free tier. What $3.99 a month actually buys is identification and control: knowing who is calling, looking a number up, and blocking by category or by area code instead of one number at a time.

Category blocking is the feature people upgrade for, so it is worth knowing exactly where it stops. Call Filter Plus will block telemarketers, nonprofits, political callers and surveys. It will not block healthcare callers, which Verizon defines as a doctor's office, hospital, ambulance or police station, and it will not block public service callers. Those two categories stay switched on no matter what you toggle.

How to set up the Verizon Call Filter app

Step 1
Check that your line qualifies
Call Filter at the free tier is included on any standard monthly plan or prepaid plan, provided the handset is compatible. There is nothing to add to the account and nothing to pay. Verizon notes that data usage still applies, because the app talks to the network.

Step 2
Open the app that is probably already there
The Call Filter app comes preloaded on most Android phones bought from Verizon. If it is not on the phone, download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Two exceptions Verizon calls out: it is not preloaded on a Prepaid Phone in a Box, and it is not preloaded on a device you brought to Verizon from another carrier.

On iPhone, update the app first
Verizon states that on iOS 18 you have to update Call Filter to the latest version before it works properly. If the app is sitting there refusing to authenticate the device, an outdated build is the first thing to rule out.

If the app will not run, use My Verizon instead
Plenty of phones cannot run the app at all. For those, open the My Verizon app or website, go to the products and plan perks page, and turn Call Filter on there. Two lines are shut out of this route entirely: prepaid devices and business lines cannot use Call Filter through My Verizon.

Decide what happens to a flagged call
In the app or in My Verizon, choose whether spam calls go to voicemail or are terminated outright. If you never touch the setting, Verizon sends them to voicemail by default, which means they still land somewhere you have to clear.

Turn on Neighborhood Filter, then deal with the supply
Neighborhood Filter forwards calls sharing your own area code and prefix to voicemail, which is what neighbor spoofing relies on. Verizon warns plainly that it blocks every call from that range and not just the spam. Once the ringing is under control, the number of calls being dialed at you is still set by how many places publish your number.
Why Verizon Call Filter says device not supported
This is the most common complaint in the whole cluster and the answer is unglamorous: Verizon publishes a list of handsets the Call Filter app cannot run on, and if yours is on it, no amount of reinstalling will help. The workaround is real, though. Every phone on that list can still use Call Filter, just through the My Verizon app or website rather than through the Call Filter app itself.
There is a second, quieter version of the same problem. On Verizon-purchased Android devices from 2017 or earlier, or on devices that do not support Android 10 or above, Verizon says the Call Filter app can no longer be updated. The app still opens and the settings still appear to change, but they may not sync back to Verizon's systems. If you are on a Galaxy S8, a Galaxy J7V, an LG G6 or an LG K20 V, manage Call Filter in My Verizon and treat the app on the handset as decoration.
A separate set of devices cannot use any Call Filter service at all: the LTE 4G Broadband Router with Voice, 3G-only voice devices, data-only devices such as tablets and hotspots, and smart accessories that are not in standalone mode.
On a dual SIM iPhone, Call Filter works when the eSIM and the physical Verizon SIM are both active at once. You can add Call Filter to both lines through My Verizon, but the app itself is only eligible for one SIM at a time and you pick which one during setup.

All of these can turn Call Filter on from the My Verizon app or website instead, with two exceptions Verizon states outright: prepaid devices and business lines cannot use Call Filter through My Verizon at all.

One column decides everything and it is the fourth one. Five of those six rows are variations on the same idea: score the call, label it, and decide whether the handset rings. That is genuinely useful and it is why the free tier is worth switching on tonight. It is also why the calls keep coming. A blocked call was still placed, still cost the caller nothing, and still tells the list broker your number is live. What Verizon Call Filter cannot do about spam calls
Call Filter is a filter. It sits between the network and your handset, reads a score the network attached to the call, and decides whether to ring, label or divert. Verizon is candid that the scoring uses analytics and evolving databases and that it does not guarantee every spam call will be detected. What matters more is the part that is true even when the scoring works perfectly: the call was still dialed.
It is also worth being clear about what the name does not cover, because this trips people up constantly. Call Filter is a call product on both tiers. It does not filter your text messages. For texts, Verizon gives you a block list in My Verizon holding up to five numbers that expires after 90 days, and the real work is done by the free filters built into your phone, which is covered in how to stop spam texts.
Your number gets dialed because somebody published it. People-search sites assemble profiles out of public records, marketing data and commercial sources, then put a name, an age, an address, a list of relatives and one or more phone numbers on a page anyone can read. Lead generators package the same material and sell it by the thousand. Neither of those businesses can see whether you pay Verizon $3.99 a month.
That is why the volume moves in steps rather than drifting. It jumps after a mortgage application, a quote form, a competition entry or a house move that generates fresh public records. A listing goes up, the listing gets scraped, and a few weeks later the phone starts. Turning on a filter at that point changes what you hear, not what is happening.

The order that works
Do these four, in this order
- 1. Switch on free Call Filter. It costs nothing, it is probably already on your account, and it works tonight.
- 2. Set the handset's own controls. On iPhone that means Screen Unknown Callers and Call Filtering, which act on the labels Verizon supplies.
- 3. Register on the Do Not Call list. Free and permanent. Allow 31 days. It binds the callers who follow the law, which is still a large share of what most people get.
- 4. Get the number off the sites publishing it. Slowest, and the only one that reduces how many calls are placed. Start with the data broker opt-out list.
Steps one to three are free and take an evening. Only step four changes the number of calls placed, which is why it is the one worth automating.

It works on the calls the network manages to score. Verizon is explicit that it does not guarantee every spam call will be detected, and the detection runs on analytics and databases rather than certainty. Expect it to clear the obvious robocall volume and to keep missing new campaigns until enough people report them. It has no effect at all on how many calls are placed to you.
Why does Verizon Call Filter say device not supported?
Because your handset is on the list of devices the app cannot run on. Verizon names Google Experience Devices including Pixels, Android phones brought from another carrier, Android smartphones made in 2017 or earlier, basic phones, Home Phone Connect, Prepaid Android Phone in a Box and standalone smart accessories. Those lines can still use Call Filter through My Verizon.
Does Verizon Call Filter work on a Google Pixel?
Not through the app. Verizon lists Google Experience Devices, which covers Pixels and the Nexus series, among the phones the Call Filter app is not compatible with. Turn Call Filter on from the My Verizon app or website instead. Pixel owners also have Google Call Screen built into the Phone app, which is a separate system from anything Verizon runs.
How do I turn off Verizon Call Filter?
Turn the spam filter off, or unsubscribe from the service, in the Call Filter app or on the My Verizon website. Verizon warns about the mistake most people make here: deleting the app does not turn the service off. Calls carry on being labeled and blocked until you actually switch off the spam filter or unsubscribe from the account.
Is Verizon Call Filter blocking legitimate calls?
It can. Spam scoring is a probability judgment, so real numbers get miscategorized. Verizon runs a spam feedback page for reporting a wrongly flagged number, and both tiers let you add a number to a personal allowed list so it will not be blocked. Neighborhood Filter is the bigger risk, because it blocks every call from a prefix rather than only the spam.
Can Verizon Call Filter block an entire area code?
Only on Call Filter Plus, and only on Android devices where the app came preloaded. The free tier caps you at five individual area code or prefix blocks through Neighborhood Filter, with no whole area code option. Plus raises that to ten and unlocks the full area code block. Verizon warns that wanted calls from that range get blocked too.
Can Verizon Call Filter block calls with no caller ID?
Not as a dedicated toggle. Call Filter acts on numbers the network has scored as spam, robocall or fraud, and on the numbers you add to a block list, so a withheld number with no reputation attached is not automatically caught. On an iPhone, Apple's own Screen Unknown Callers setting is the control that silences unsaved and withheld numbers.
What do the Verizon spam labels actually mean?
Verizon uses three. Potential Spam means a caller likely dialing indiscriminately or inappropriately at scale. Robo Caller means an automated caller with a pre-recorded message. Potential Fraud means an entity likely pretending to be someone else with malicious intent. On the free tier all three collapse into one label: everything flagged simply reads Potential Spam.
